The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department site formerly known as Peach Point Wildlife Management area near Freeport, Texas, will be formally rededicated on Friday, October 12 as the “Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area”, in recognition of the former game warden and wildlife biologist who was killed the line of duty earlier in 2007. A team of employees in the Wildlife and Law Enforcement Divisions, with support from several outside partner groups, is planning and organizing the dedication.
The 15,612-acre WMA is known for its lush wetlands and coastal plains harboring waterfowl and numerous aquatic and terrestrial wildlife species. Current plans for the day are for self-guided tours from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The formal program will begin at 2:00 p.m., with several friends and employees offering comments about Justin. The afternoon will lead up to remarks from state and agency leaders and Justin’s family, concluding around 4:00 p.m.
For more information, telephone the WMA at (979) 233-8729 or call (979) 244-6804.
